adapted from Daniel 6:1-24 by Breanne, 10, Iowa
My name is Ezekiel, and I’m a mouse. I live in Babylon. My adventure began yesterday when I overheard talking by the castle gate. The king’s wise men were discussing a new law: Anyone who prays to a god other than the king will be thrown into the pit of lions. I don’t like this law. But mice don’t count, so I can pray whenever I want.
I live in the lion pit. Most of the time, the lions don’t mind. I always get out of their way when it’s feeding time.
I heard the wise men talking about my friend Daniel. Daniel likes to pray. He prays three times a day—but not to the king. Daniel prays to the one true God.
As I turned to scamper home, I saw the king’s guards dragging Daniel out of his house toward the lion’s pit. I began to run. I’m glad God made me a fast runner. Just as I reached the edge of the pit, they threw in Daniel.
I ran into my hole because I was so scared, and I didn’t come out for a long time. I heard Daniel praying. I peeked out and saw an amazing sight! Daniel was walking around among the lions, talking to them and petting them like they were big kittens.
I looked at the lions. All they could say was, "Mmmphfff." They couldn’t open their mouths! God had saved Daniel.
The next day the king came running to see if Daniel was okay. Daniel served the king, and the king hadn’t slept all night because he was worried about Daniel. When the king found out that the lions hadn’t touched Daniel, he jumped for joy and ordered guards to bring out Daniel.
Then Daniel said, "I prayed and my God shut the lions’ mouths!"
The king said, "Throw the wise men that did this into the lion’s pit. From now on my whole kingdom will pray only to Daniel’s God!"
