Who, Me?

Moses was a Hebrew, but he was not a slave in Egypt like the other Hebrews. Moses lived in another land called Midian and took care of sheep.

Out with his sheep one day, Moses saw a bush on fire. It burned and burned. But it did not burn up. Moses went closer to get a better look. Then he heard a voice.

“Moses, Moses!” It was God’s voice.

“I’m right here,” Moses replied. But he felt afraid.

“Moses,” God said, “I have a job for you.”

Moses felt even more afraid.

“I want you to go to the king of Egypt,” God said. “Tell him to let the Hebrews leave. I have new land for them to live in.”

Moses felt even more afraid.

“Who, me?” Moses said. His whole body shook. “How can I do such a big job?”

“I will be with you,” God said.

Moses gulped. “But . . . but what do I tell the Hebrew people?” he asked.

“Tell them I sent you,” God answered.

Moses felt sweat trickle down his neck. “But . . . but what if they don’t believe me?”

“What do you have in your hand?” God asked.

“A wooden staff,” Moses answered.

“Throw it on the ground,” God commanded.

Moses threw it down. The staff turned into a snake.

“Now pick it up,” God said.

Carefully Moses picked up the snake by its tail. Suddenly it was a staff again.

“I will send signs like this so the people will believe you,” God said. But Moses still was not ready to do what God wanted. He didn’t think he was good enough.

“Please send someone else,” he said. “I can’t talk very well.”

“Moses,” God said, “I made your mouth. I will help you. And I will send your brother Aaron to help you speak.”

Moses thought about it. “Hmm,” he finally said. “Maybe I can do this hard job.”

So Moses obeyed God. He went to Egypt. He talked to the king and to the Hebrew people. Aaron helped Moses. Most of all, God helped Moses. Moses tried his best . . . and he did it!
