Fiery Face-Off

To everyone who was watching the showdown on the mountain, it looked like Elijah was in trouble. Standing up to a flood of false prophets, Elijah seemed alone.

But God was with him.

“How long will you serve an idol or a wicked king?” Elijah boldly asked. “Let’s prove once and for all who is the King of kings and then serve Him.

“You call on the name of your idol, Baal,” Elijah continued, “and I will call on the name of the Lord. The one who answers by fire is the one, true God.”

The false prophets set to work. For hours they pranced and paraded, hoping to convince their idol to set fire to their altar.

“Shout louder!” Elijah suggested. “Maybe your god is sleeping.”

The false prophets shouted and shimmied. They searched for sparks. They sniffed for smoke. But the silly stunts of a mountain full of moaners could not get the attention of an idol made of stone.

As the sun set, Elijah got up from his seat. Quietly he repaired the altar of the Lord and prepared it for the power of the almighty God. He even dug a ditch around the altar.

Then, in a shocking show of faith, Elijah soaked the stones and the wood with water—again and again and again.

“What is he doing?” the crowd gasped. “Nothing that wet will catch on fire!”

Ignoring the whispers, Elijah refused to water down the truth. “Oh, Lord,” he prayed aloud, “let it be known today that you are God and that I have done all these things at Your command.”

Whoosh!

Before the crowd could even blink, fire of the Lord fell on the altar. Everyone watched with wide eyes as everything burned to the ground in a scorching blaze.

When the smoke cleared, the crowd looked at the wicked king’s prophets. Then they looked at Elijah, the servant of the highest King.

For a moment the mountain was silent. Then the people declared what Elijah had known all along: “The Lord—He is God!”
