Veggie Girl
by Suzanne Hadley

Like many kids, Alijandra N. loves VeggieTales. Those silly talking vegetables make her laugh. But 9-year-old Ally has an extra-special reason for loving her veggies: Larry the Cucumber is her dad.

Ally's dad, Mike, is the voice of Larry and the co-creator of VeggieTales.

“It's a really fun thing to have your dad as Larry the Cucumber,” she says with a giggle.

That giggle came in handy when Ally played the voice of the Rock Monster Girl in The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, a VeggieTales movie in theaters this month. For the part, Ally had to laugh . . . and laugh . . . and laugh. “I laughed for at least 10 or 15 minutes,” she says. “They tickled me once, but the rest of the time I just laughed on my own.

Ally started doing voices for VeggieTales three years ago, when director Tim Hodge was looking for someone to play the voice of Annie in The Star of Christmas. Ally's dad knew she would be great for the part.

“She's always been a good reader,” he says. “And when she read out loud, she would really take on the character in the story.”

Ally auditioned and got the role. Since then she's done voices for several short VeggieTales movies. She also sang on the Easter CD.

The best thing about being part of The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, Ally says, was working with her dad in the studio. Sometimes he gives her tips, “but most of the time he just likes the way I do it.”

Mike started doing voices as a teenager, when he made them up for church puppet shows. His Larry the Cucumber voice started out as a puppet character named Soupy.

Doing voices comes naturally to Ally. “I just use my regular voice,” she says. Besides laughing as the Rock Monster Girl, Ally also played the part of George's daughter, Lucy, who is a grape.

For the movie, each voice was recorded separately. Ally could hear other characters' lines through her headphones, but she recorded alone in the studio.

“My dad was on the other side of the glass, so he was helping me out,” Ally says.

Ally's dad, who directed The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, is excited for kids to see the film. “It's really funny,” he says. “There's just something fun about being on the ocean and action and adventure. God calls us into adventure, and He wants us to follow Him.”

Ally looks forward to being involved with more VeggieTales projects in the future. “A lot of kids who aren't Christians yet can learn from VeggieTales, because it really teaches a good lesson,” she says.

“I'm just so proud as a dad,” Mike says of Ally. “She does such a good job.”

That's big praise from most famous cucumber on the planet.
