Critter-Friendly Christmas Tree

Pop Goes the Garland

Gather

  • air-popped popcorn
  • cranberries (optional)
  • thread
  • needle
Go
  1. Pop some popcorn and gather some cranberries.
  2. Cut a 2-foot piece of thread. (You can add more later.) Thread one end through a needle and tie a large knot at the other end. Be sure to make the knot big enough keep the popcorn from slipping off.
  3. Stick the needle through the center of a piece of popcorn. If you are including cranberries, create a pattern by alternating them after several pieces of popcorn.
  4. Tie more string to the end to make a longer garland.
  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 until you've reached your desired length.
  6. Wrap the garland around your tree.

For the Birds

Gather

  • pinecones
  • peanut butter
  • bird seed
  • string
Go
  1. Tie a string to the top of the pinecone for easy hanging.
  2. Smear peanut butter on the pinecone
  3. Roll the covered pinecone in birdseed.

Toasty Ornaments

Gather

  • thick slices of bread
  • cookie cutters
  • string
Go
  1. Cut fun shapes out of the bread using the cookie cutters.
  2. Set the bread out until it's stale, or bake it until it's toasted.
  3. Tie a string through top of each ornament and hang them on your tree.

Don't Forget: Decorate the tree from top to bottom. Birds will happily peck at the tidbits at the top while rabbits and other ground creatures will eat the delicacies on the lower branches. Watch every day as the wild animals feast on the tree and the ornaments disappear!
