Money Mystery

Gather
  • a penny, nickel, dime and quarter
  • shallow bowl or cup
  • a friend
  • cup filled with water
Go
  1. Place a coin in the bottom of the empty cup.
  2. Back away from the cup until the coin goes out of sight.
  3. Close your eyes and ask a friend to place a different coin in the same place in the cup.
  4. Ask your friend to pour a little water in the cup. Soon you'll be able to see the coin and make a correct guess.

Why Did It Work?
Water changes the direction of the light rays reflecting off the coin. When light rays leave the water and enter the air they bend, so you can see the coin. Scientists call this bending of light refraction.
