Waterproof Tissues

by Elizabeth Hey

Did you enjoy the "Wacky Science Experiments" in our October issue? Here's another mind-bending trick!

Gather

tissue
6-ounce glass
2-quart bowl filled with water

Go

1. Stuff the tissue into the glass so it won’t fall out when turned over.
2. Turn the glass upside down.
3. Push glass into the bowl of water, keeping it perpendicular to the ground.

What Happens . . .

The tissue stays dry as the glass is pushed under water.

What's the Deal?

Air occupies space inside the cup. Water cannot get into the same space, so the tissue remains dry. If the glass tilts while it’s underwater, the air escapes, allowing water to rush in.

Matthew 6:24 says, “No one can be a slave of two masters.” If you fill up your life with selfish pursuits (money, popularity, even knowledge), then you won’t have room for God. On the other hand, if you let God in with an open heart, He’ll fill every inch of you. You’ll still feel tempted now and then, but it will be easier to resist, like somebody offering you ice cream after you’ve eaten way too much pizza.
