Wooton’s Random Ramblings: Mystery Box

by David, 12, from Alberta

Dear B. Log,

On my mail route last Saturday, I had a special package for Whit’s End. But as I approached the shop, I didn’t hear the usual chatter of kids. It was silent.

Someone had left a note on the front door: “Whit’s End Closed.”

That’s weird, I thought.

Just then, a grimy hand grasped my shoulder and a loud voice boomed, “So you’re the culprit!”

“What did I do?” I asked.

“You know very well, you curly-haired criminal.”

I turned to face my accuser. “Harlow?”

“What? How did you know it was me?” Harlow asked.

“No one can mistake you, even in a fake mustache.” I said.

“Oh. Well, back to the point.” Harlow flipped through his notepad. “Early this morning, I received reports from several worried kids that Whit’s End was closed. It’s not a holiday, and Mr. Whittaker hasn’t gone on vacation, so why would it be closed on a Saturday? The evidence points to you.”

“Me?” I asked.

“Yes, you.” Harlow answered. “You’re the only one here.”

“But I just came to deliver a package.”

“Ah ha!” Harlow took the package from my hands. “And why would you deliver a package to a shop that’s closed? Your story doesn’t add up.”

“Um, I didn’t know it was closed.” I was starting to get confused.

“Really . . . and why do you have all those keys on your belt?”

“These are my keys.”

“So you admit it!” Harlow said. “It’s a genius plan. Lock the doors and put up a sign to keep the kids away. Then you stroll by with your decoy box, unlock the doors and eat all the ice cream by yourself.”

Just then, the doorknob rattled. We heard a key in the lock, and Connie opened the door. “Finally! Wooton, you’re just in time. We’ve almost finished the decorations for Whit’s birthday party, and the balloons are in that box.”

“Another case solved!” Harlow shouted.

“But one mystery remains,” I said, turning to Connie. “Did you get an ice cream cake?”
