Gnomeo & Juliet

Blue garden gnomes (the Montagues) versus red garden gnomes (the Capulets). And Gnomeo and Juliet are caught in the middle. Gnomeo is the leader of the Montagues and always up for a good fight against his red neighbors. Juliet is a beautiful red gnome whose controlling father, Redbrick, forces her to stand on a pedestal—literally. It is love at first sight, but intercolor gnome romance is only the beginning of new troubles for the sweethearts. In fact, Juliet's best friend says they have nothing more than a doomed love.

Even with all the attacks the Montagues and Capulets unleash upon each other, ultimately Gnomeo and Juliet's love helps everyone to see that they can forgive and forget. Even though revenge is a big part of the story, the film points out the foolishness of that choice. Gnomeo and Juliet both put their very breakable lives on the line for each other and reach out to protect and help friends in need.

Many of the characters in Gnomeo & Juliet endure silly slapstick violence, including being thumped with garden hoses, tearing down fences with a lawn mower and smashing into a wall. The action never feels too intense or scary. There are several potty humor jokes and some popular songs with lyrics not aimed at children.

Just like in Toy Story, the gnomes can only come to life when people aren't watching. And that definitely adds some smiles when humans happen to glance in the direction of the suddenly frozen gnomes. One thing's pretty much for sure: All this fast-paced backyard adventure makes for a silly take on a well-known love story—that Shakespeare himself could never have imagined.
