Stanley Yelnats’ is digging holes. Every 24 hours he digs a hole exactly five feet in diameter and five feet deep in the barren, sun-scorched earth of Camp Green Lake, a "getaway" for juvenile delinquents. His superiors tell him he’s digging holes to build his character. But Stanley doesn’t particularly need to have his character built since he was arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. He and his fellow inmates—the aptly nicknamed X-Ray, Armpit, Zig-Zag, Magnet, Squid and Zero—are told that they’ll get a day off from work if they find something "interesting" while they’re digging.

But not surprisingly, the supervisors at Camp Green Lake don’t really care about character. They’re looking for something and using Stanley and gang to find it. As time passes and Stanley tries to figure out what everyone’s searching for, a greater mystery begins to unfold—a mystery buried in a hole, coated in dust.

Holes explores some worthwhile themes, including friendship, justice, love of family and perseverance. Unfortunately the side plot of a curse on Stanley’s family, replaces God with an emphasis on “destiny.” Also, the film contains some crudity, violence and misuses of the Lord’s name. But older kids and pre-teens who see Holes with their parents will have a lot of good stuff to talk about afterwards.
