Movies once inspired theme-park rides. Now it’s the other way around. Disney’s swashbuckling action film Pirates of the Caribbean delivers the thrills, laughs and romance audiences demand from a summer movie. But it might be too scary for kids.

Courted by a stuffy commodore, a beautiful girl secretly pines for a humble blacksmith, who is equally smitten with her. A ghostly galleon full of pirates who cannot die pays a visit in search of a gold doubloon needed to reverse a pagan curse. Capt. Jack Sparrow, a former member of the buccaneers’ crew, blows into port with a different plan—to steal a ship. But when pirates kidnap the girl, Sparrow and the sword-wielding blacksmith race to her aid.

The movie is quite violent with many deaths, though there’s not a lot of blood. People get shot at close range and run through with swords. There are stabbings, hangings and a few slit throats. When exposed to moonlight, the pirates appear as rotting corpses. Sailors drink rum and party with underdressed ladies. Language isn’t an issue except for frequent use of the British profanity "bloody."

Pirates of the Caribbean is a scary movie that isn’t really for kids. The creepy violence alone should keep most Clubhouse readers from setting sail.
