In this new twist on an old story, young Cinderella,
Sam, loses her beloved dad to a California earthquake.
But not before he foolishly marries Fiona, a woman who
cares more about her looks and money than people.
Fiona has two daughters of her own, Brianna and
Gabriella, who live to torture and insult their new
stepsister. Sam's Prince Charming comes in the form of
a boy she meets in a Princeton University chat room.
(Both are planning on attending the college the
following year.) The two teens go to the same Southern
California high school, but they've never officially met—
yet. Their first meeting is set for the Halloween costume
dance.
This movie has the typical Cinderella messages. Follow
your dreams. Stick up for yourself. Don't be cruel. Be a
good friend. Stop caring so much about what people
think of you. Early scenes also show the importance of
the bond between a father and daughter.
Although this Cinderella Story provides some
good things to think about, not everything in this movie
is happily ever after. High school girls dress
immodestly. Couples kiss passionately. There is some
pushing, shoving and tripping. There is also name-
calling, one mild profanity and a couple misuses of
God's name.
Hilary Duff fans won’t be disappointed by her sweet
portrayal of Sam, a modern-day Cinderella. But the
modern spin on this classic tale doesn’t live up to the
magic of the original.
