As a Hollywood star, Irish terrier Rexxx has life by the tail. Then he takes an accidental skydive on a movie shoot, without his parachute. Trey Falcon, the dog's handler, assumes Rexxx is dead meat. But a soft landing in a tomato truck preserves the canine's life, and a firefighter rescues him. Rexxx is a welcome addition to Captain Connor's struggling crew, and the dog soon makes front-page news for his daring rescues. Trey sees the story and comes to reclaim Rexxx, just when the firefighters need his help to catch a serial arsonist.

Meanwhile, Rexxx helps Connor and his tween son Shane, whose relationship suffered after the loss of Connor's brother. Although Shane makes defiant choices early in the film, this father/son relationship becomes strong by the end. Honor and courage triumph among the firefighters, particularly when Connor risks his life to save a rival fire chief.

Firefighting scenes grow rather intense at times, and a few words should have never flared up. Crude doggy humor shows up in several spots, and some adults drink or dress immodestly.

Firehouse Dog is less about a heroic dog than it is about a father and son. Conflict is conquered as the two learn to communicate and work through loss. While kids and their parents may want to sound the alarm a few times in this film, it primarily shows how to quench family fires with love and discipline.
