Miss Potter

Starring:Renee Zellweger as Beatrix Potter, Emily Watson as Millie Warne, and Ewan McGregor as Norman Warne.

Ever heard of Peter Rabbit? He first hops to life in the imagination of an English girl named Beatrix Potter. Born in 1866, Beatrix frequently fascinates her brother and nursemaid with tales of furry friends. Beatrix grows up without losing her imagination and is certain that children would enjoy her stories in book form. But Beatrix's mother pressures her to forget such childish nonsense. Society expects Miss Potter to settle into life as a proper wife, not become a published author.

Undaunted, Beatrix takes her tales to one publisher after another. Following many rejections, one of the Warne brothers accepts Miss Potter's manuscript as a project for his younger brother, expecting it to flop. But Norman is captivated by Miss Potter's stories, as well as Beatrix herself. The two work to make the book a success and, meanwhile, fall in love. Of course, Beatrix' sophisticated mother does not approve of the match, and Beatrix struggles to honor her parents while pursuing her dreams.

Miss Potter's steadfast hope and bright spirit are a delight to watch. She rejects social norms without becoming bitter or unfeminine. Beatrix' determination and perseverance are inspiring, and she overcomes tragedy with the help of a good friend.

A crude word and some drinking cloud the mostly sunny skies of this film. Beatrix forms a shaky peace with her mother, and her father praises her success. With animated portions scattered throughout this sweet tale, Miss Potter is a joy for the whole family to watch.
