by Kathy Wierenga

The Odyssey Civic Center has announced the winners of its annual poetry contest.
“This year we emphasized letting our imaginations soar,” said judge and Odyssey Middle School English teacher Mr. Graham Herd. “And they soared in places I would have never imagined.”

First place—Most Technical category:
“My Terminal”
by Eugene Meltsner
Nothing quite brings a smile to my face,
like an icon, module or database.
And when I’m feeling disheartened or weary,
I lift my spirits by running a query.
My favorite home page couldn’t be cuter.
For I am enamored with my computer.

First place—Nature category:
“Nature Calls”
by Aubrey Andromeda Shepard
The silence of the trees is marvelous.
Its beauty not a soul could crush.
For through the majestic, whispering pines,
you can hear the bluebirds flush.

First place—Favorite Person category:
“Ode to Edwin Blackgaard”
by Edwin Blackgaard
Many fine actors enter the stage,
and marvelous performances we see.
But search all around and I’m sure you’ll find,
none as wonderful as me!

Test your knowledge by answering these questions.
