Up a Creek
by Kathy Wierenga

Oak Street flooded last week after Bernard Walton accidentally ran into a fire hydrant with his pickup truck.

“I was trying to avoid hitting a group of half-crazed, completely clumsy in-line skaters,” Mr. Walton explained to police.

Upon impact, water erupted like a geyser from the fire hydrant, flooding the entire street. Neighbors found their way to dry land using boats made out of old coffee tables, spare pieces of plywood and even a guitar case. Emergency vehicles were called to the scene, and the flooding was under control later that evening.

Bernard later saw the more positive side of the event. “At least I didn’t have to take my truck to the car wash that day.”
