Connie’s Cooking Catastrophes
by Kathy Wierenga

Connie Kendall decided she needs to improve her cooking skills.

"I know I haven’t been successful in the past, but I’m gradually improving," she said. "Last time I cooked, only one fire truck was necessary. And the spatula was still in one piece, too."

Connie decided to give up preparing grilled cheese sandwiches, cakes and brownies, which had produced disastrous results in the past. Instead, she chose to try her hand at an all-American favorite—chocolate chip cookies.

"Now that I’m working at the Timothy Center, I want to have cookies around for the guests," she said.

After a great deal of convincing by Connie, Eugene Meltsner agreed to try one of her cookies. He tentatively took a nibble and then sampled a little more. A surprised Eugene declared the cookie, "quite edible," which Connie took as a compliment.

When asked what her secret was, Connie left nothing a mystery. "It was easy. I went to the grocery store and bought a package of cookies. Then I came home, opened up the package and arranged them on a plate. Tada! I’m a master chef."

Eugene’s response? "I am most grateful that Miss Kendall has finally discovered her niche in the culinary world."

John Avery Whittaker suggested Connie try heating up the cookies next time to give them a fresh-out-of-the oven taste. Connie thought this was a great idea and promptly went out back to fire up the grill.
