After the recent downpour in Odyssey, last week’s break from bad weather was a welcome reprieve. Many families decided to head to the mountains and spend Thanksgiving at Camp What-a-Nut.
The families pitched horseshoes, played pin-the-feather-on-the-turkey and took part in three-legged races. The weekend was going according to plan until everyone sat down for Thanksgiving dinner.
Just as John Avery Whittaker started to carve the turkey, drops of rain began to fall. The diners scattered, salvaging as much food as possible, and ran into the What-a-Nut cafeteria.
But as they ate dinner, an overpowering stench wafted into the camp area. That’s when Whit remembered the translation of the camp’s name: "land that stinks like swamp."
The Odyssey residents fled the camp and headed to Whit’s End for dinner. But as soon as Whit lifted the carving knife, the electricity went out. The crowd evacuated Whit’s End, leaving the turkey behind. Tom Riley suggested they head to the Timothy Center where there was a backup power generator. Pepperoni pizza was later delivered.
Though it was an unusual Thanksgiving, the people made the best of the situation and shared their gratitude for friends, family and safety while laughing about the day’s events.
