The annual Sunshine Girls cookie sale ended
yesterday with members selling the largest number of
boxes in years. The group sold approximately 56,000
boxes in Campbell County alone.
Local team leader Tamika Washington said, “We are so
excited with this year’s tally! We can have really cool
summer camps next year with the money we raised.”
This year’s numbers are attributed to a competition
between divisions. The top sellers in each chapter
received prizes, and the chapter with the highest
overall tally received a bonus prize: Girls could rename
their chapter whatever they chose.
The most intense rivalry featured chapters 4474 and
4744.
“I couldn’t believe how many boxes my teammates
sold!” Washington said. “With the chance to rename our
troop, we were all very determined.”
On the final day of sales, two chapters led the pack in a
close race. Just when it looked like 4474 had won,
some last-minute chocolate chip cookie orders forced a
recount.
The recount put Chapter 4744 ahead by 29 boxes.
Chapter 4474 was not about to be beaten and noted
that many of the order slips were confusing. Some
check marks for peanut butter cookies looked like
check marks for chocolate mint. Chapter 4474
demanded that all the sheets be sent back to the cookie
buyers to make certain they were accurate.
The second recount revealed that Chapter 4744 was
indeed the winner.
“I was so excited,” Washington said. “The girls in my
troop worked really hard and they deserved the prize.”
The girls of Chapter 4744 decided to use their prize to
rename their group Chapter 4774.
