| Q. |
A friend of mine believes in God but says we shouldn't have to read the Bible. What should I do? Larissa, 11 Washington |
| A. | Some people figure reading a book written a long time ago is a waste of time. Others think they already know everything in the Bible. Either way, these people have missed the point. God communicates to His children through the Bible. Every time God's Word is read, something new is discovered. Valuable lessons and instructions about life from our heavenly Father are learned. Psalm 119:105 says the Bible is "a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path." God instructs us to read His word because it's useful for "teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). It's great your friend believes in God. But in John 14:15, Jesus says: "If you love me, you will obey what I command." Remind her that reading the Bible is an important way of finding out who God is, what He wants us to do and what spectacular things He's accomplished through others who have followed Him. |
