Questions & Answers

Q. My friend and I were driving a golf cart, and it was almost dark. We started going fast. I hit a pothole, we lifted off the ground and my friend fell out. I hadn’t driven this kind of golf cart before, so I couldn’t find the brake. My feet searched frantically, but no luck. By this time, I was off the path and in the woods. I drove into a tree to stop. The golf cart’s bumper had been bent, but fortunately the axle was okay. We returned the cart without telling his dad (who owns the golf course) about the accident. I don’t think this is lying, but is it a sin?

A. Wow! That scene sounds like it should be in an action movie. We’re just glad God protected you guys and you’re all right. And do you know what? Your parents will feel the same way. A golf cart is just a thing; you’re their child. You may have to face some consequences for wrecking the cart, but it would probably be worse if you didn’t tell and your friend’s dad found out later—then you’d lose your parents’ trust. And earning back trust can take a while.

Leviticus 19:11 says, "Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another." To deceive means to mislead or give someone a false impression. And deceiving someone is a sin. You may not have lied about the cart, but you deceived your friend’s dad by not telling him what happened. Just the fact that you’re asking the question shows that the Holy Spirit is working on you and you’re experiencing pangs of guilt. ’Fess up . . . you’ll feel better.
