| Q. |
I like to read the Harry Potter books, but my mom and dad feel these books try to make witchcraft an acceptable thing in our society. Are these books really dangerous? Peter, 13 Washington |

A big debate is going on right now about Harry Potter. Some Christians believe the books are just exciting, make-believe stories. Others feel they teach witchcraft, something God says is evil. So what does the Bible say about Harry Potter? Amazingly, Harry Potter isn’t once mentioned in Scripture. But God’s Word does provide some helpful guidelines. Deuteronomy 18:10 says: "Let no one be found among you who . . . practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells." Many books, TV programs and movies make witchcraft seem fun and innocent, but God makes it clear we should have nothing to do with it. If your parents feel uneasy about you reading Harry Potter, that’s a good indication that you shouldn’t be reading it. Talk to your parents about the pros and cons of the books. If they still don’t want you reading them, honor their decision. Then you might want to check out these exciting books: C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia; J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy; or Frank Peretti’s Cooper Kids Adventure series or The Veritas Project books. |
