| Q. |
I have a pen pal who really wants to be my close friend. But I don't feel we're meant to be friends and want to break off the relationship with her. How can I tell her? Angela, 13 Wisconsin |
| A. |
Ending any relationship can be difficult, especially when the other person wants it to continue. The first thing you need to do is make sure you should break off the friendship. Pray and ask God to give you a peace and clear direction to take with your pen pal. Make sure your decision isn’t based on feelings, because they can change. Once you’re positive this is a relationship you shouldn’t be in, you need to write her and let her know. Abruptly ending your correspondence without giving a reason isn’t really an option. It will only hurt your friend even more. Send a letter to your pen pal explaining your decision. Be honest, but remember to speak the truth in love. Tell her you have enjoyed writing her over the years, share some of your favorite memories and jot down your reasons for wanting to end the relationship. Proverbs 16:13 says, “Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value a man who speaks the truth.” The King of kings also values honesty . . . and so will your pen pal. |
