| Q. |
I don't believe in magic, but I like stories about fairies and unicorns. The Bible says that witchcraft is bad. Is stuff like fairies and unicorns witchcraft? Bronwyn, 11 New Zealand |

Great question. You’re right, the Bible says to stay away from magic and witchcraft. Just check out Revelation 21:8, Galatians 5:19-21 and Deuteronomy 18:10 for the hard facts. But if you go to any bookstore or library, you’ll find all kinds of stories for kids that contain witchcraft. The popular Harry Potter and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch books portray witches as heroes. Recently kids have shown greater interest in spells, Wicca and other things from the occult—possibly because of the influence of these books. And that’s all stuff to stay away from! Not all books that contain unicorns and fairies can be considered evil. C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia” feature unicorns and fantastic characters. But they also paint a powerful picture of Jesus’ sacrifice. “The Lord of the Rings” series by J.R.R. Tolkien also has many positive themes. And more recent series such as the “Bloodstone Chronicles” by Bill Myers or the “Matterhorn the Brave” books by Mike Hamel have fantasy elements and strong Christian lessons. The key is to listen to the Holy Spirit. If something bothers you as you read, put down the book. Let God be your guide. Your parents can also be a source for good advice. Have fun reading! |
