| Q. |
In Leviticus 11:1-8 it says animals that do not have split hooves and do not chew cud, such as a pig, should not be eaten. Christians eat pigs. Is this wrong? Chris, 11 Manitoba |

In the Old Testament, God gave His people direct instructions on how to live. Leviticus is full of laws, including the one about not eating “unclean” animals. But in the New Testament, Jesus gives followers a new commandment. In Mark 7:18-19 it says, “ ‘Are you so dull?’ he asked. ‘Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’? For it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.’ (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods ‘clean.’).” Ultimately Jesus says it’s not what goes into the body that makes a person unclean, but it’s what comes out of his heart and mouth. If those around you have specific eating restrictions, honor their personal choices. But what someone eats shouldn’t affect how he loves God or his neighbor. |
