| Q. |
I just got a retainer so I can't chew gum or eat popcorn, gummy worms, gummy bears and caramel. What should I do? Liana, 8 Minnesota |
| A. |
Giving up all that yummy, gummy stuff sounds like a drag. But when you really think about it, there are lots of other great-tasting foods you can eat while you have to wear your retainer! Try cutting up pieces of fruit. Chunks of apple, orange, strawberries, cantaloupe or banana are delicious and good for you. If you’re still looking for a sugar fix, stay away from the sticky stuff and try lollipops, Tic-Tacs or Life Savers. They’re probably okay as long as you don’t chew on them! Ice cream (without nuts and caramel) is a winning taste bud treat, along with Popsicles, Fudgsicles or Dreamsicles.
Following your orthodontist’s rules can help speed up the process until your retainer comes off. Before you know it, you’ll be back munching popcorn—with perfectly straight teeth! |
