Questions & Answers

Q. I haven't been very truthful to my mom, and I get in so much trouble. It just seems that I can't stop.
Bethany, 11
Georgia

A. You’re already on the road to changing, Bethany, because you’ve realized some important things.

No. 1: You have a problem with lying.
No. 2: Lying brings consequences.
No. 3: Habits are difficult to break.

So what do you do? Try starting a new habit. Be totally truthful with your mom about everything—even if you know it will get you in trouble (because she’ll probably find out anyway). Pretty soon you’ll replace a bad habit (lying) with a good habit (being truthful). Plus, your mom will start to trust you more, because she’ll know you’re telling the truth. And that will go a long way in strengthening your relationship with her.
