Q. W hy do preachers say that God is a jealous God? I thought He was perfect and loving, but isn’t jealousy a sin?
Tory, 10
Ohio

A. Great question! The Bible does say that God is a jealous God. And jealousy can be a sin. But the word jealous has more than one meaning. One definition is "carefully guarding a possession." Because we are God’s children, He is jealous of our attention. He wants us to love and serve only Him. But He is also holy, and His motives are only good and just. Even people can have "good" jealousy. Paul says: "I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy" (2 Corinthians 11:2).

Jealousy becomes a sin when we envy what others have. 1 Peter 2:1 says, "Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind." God never demonstrates this kind of jealousy, and neither should we.
