Questions & Answers

Q. I' ve been listening to the wrong kind of music lately. I know my parents don’t like it, but I've become addicted. How do I stop?

A. You’re really dealing with two issues here: obeying your parents and staying away from bad music. As far as the first goes, there are lots of verses in the Bible about obeying your parents. They want only what’s good for you—and the music you’re listening to definitely isn’t good. Talk to them and ask them to help you, even if it means getting in trouble.

Second, you may want to read and memorize Colossians 2:8. It says, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition . . . rather than on Christ.” The music you’re hearing is both hollow and deceptive—and you know it. That’s what’s great about the Holy Spirit. He tells you when you’re doing something wrong. Throw away any bad CDs you have, and ask friends to turn off music you don’t agree with.

The best way to stop is to just do it. And with God’s help, you can!
