Q. I have a T-shirt with a yin yang sign on the back. When my mom bought it, she didn’t know what it meant. My friends say it means good and bad are equal. What should I tell them?
Lucas, 11

A. The meaning of the yin yang symbol can be traced back to the Chinese philosophy of Taoism. The black swirl (yin) stands for negative energy or evil, while the white swirl (yang) represents positive things or good. The two forces mix together and cause everything to happen. Each has a little bit of the other one in it, so there’s a little bad in the good and a little good in the bad.

First of all, there aren’t two forces controlling things on Earth. God is in charge. Nothing happens beyond His scope of power. The Bible is clear on the second point, Jesus lived a perfect life and there was no evil in Him. Satan, on the other hand, is a liar and there is no truth in him (John 8:44). As a follower of Christ, you may want to rethink wearing the yin yang symbol.
