Questions & Answers

Q. How can I stop swearing when I hear it all the time from my classmates?
Jaisy, 8
New Brunswick

A. Taming the tongue takes terrific toughness. (Try saying that 10 times fast.) And hanging around with friends that have nasty vocabularies can make it even harder. A great verse for you to memorize is
1 Timothy 4:12, "Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity." Write that verse on a card and tape it on your bathroom mirror or on your dresser where you will see it every day.

As a follower of Christ, your speech and actions should set you apart. Although you can’t control what your classmates say, you can explain to your friends that you’d prefer it if they wouldn’t swear around you. Tell them you’re trying to clean up what comes out of your mouth. Maybe your stand will encourage others to quit cussing, too. Don’t forget to pray and ask God to give you the strength to be a light for Him at school . . . and everywhere else.
