Questions & Answers

Q. At school, on the bus and many other places, I hear the terms retard, sped, mental and things like that. I have two cousins who are mentally retarded, and they're the most wonderful people to be around. I want to do something, but I don't know what.
Amanda, 12
Massachusetts

A. It’s a shame that some kids can be so narrow-minded and cruel. Unfortunately, changing ignorance isn’t easy. If other children knew the joy, friendship and love you’ve experienced in your relationship with your cousins, then they wouldn’t be so quick to use those derogatory terms. Everybody was created in God’s image and according to His purpose. Your cousins have a lot to offer, and it’s great that you know that, Amanda!

Your example can do a lot to change the people around you. When other kids say those names or tease others, you can remain noticeably silent or say, “I don’t think it’s nice to name-call.” You may not be able to change the name-callers, but your stance for what is right will affect other kids—even if you never hear about it.
