Q. I have a friend who seems to feel insecure in our relationship. She tries to build herself up and prove things to me. how can I let her know that I love her for who she is?

A. It sounds like you’re a true blue friend—the best kind. You can’t change how your friend acts, but you can do things to help her realize your friendship is unconditional.

Tell her often the things you like about her. For example, “I think it’s cool that you’re kind to people” or “I like the way you make me laugh.” Let her know you enjoy being her friend. When she starts bragging or trying to prove herself, don’t make a big deal about it. The more you show your friend that you value her for who she is, the easier it will be for her to relax and enjoy your friendship.
