Stained-Glass Cookies
Gather
  • 1 cup softened margarine
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 baking soda
  • 3 cups flour
  • bright-colored hard candies or lollipops
  • aluminum foil
  • waxed paper
  • small plastic bags
  • a hammer
Go
  1. In a large bowl, mix together margarine, sugar and honey. Add water and stir until smooth.
  2. Combine salt, baking soda and flour in a separate bowl.
  3. Add the salt combination to the sugar mixture by stirring in slowly.
  4. Knead the dough by squishing it between your fingers. When the dough gets soft, put it in the freezer to chill for at least 10 minutes.
  5. Heat the oven to 325 degrees F.
  6. Sprinkle some flour on a piece of waxed paper. Then roll pieces of dough into long, thin strips.
  7. On a separate piece of waxed paper, use the strips to create designs. Be sure to make a loop at the top if you’re going to use these cookies as ornaments.
  8. Carefully turn over the dough design onto a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil. Gently pull away the waxed paper.
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for each cookie.
  10. Put your dough designs in the oven and bake for 5 to 8 minutes. While you wait, unwrap candies and separate by color. Put each color in a small bag and crack with a hammer (tap lightly).
  11. When the dough designs are done baking, take them out of the oven and let them cool.
  12. Fill each section of the dough designs with a layer of candy pieces.
  13. Put the filled cookies back in the oven until the candy starts to bubble. Watch carefully to make sure the cookies don’t burn. Remove and let cool.
  14. Once the candy has hardened, peel from foil. Enjoy!
