Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies
In the 1930s, Ruth and Kenneth Wakefield owned a restaurant called the Toll House Inn. One day Ruth was baking cookies and the recipe called for melted baker's chocolate. All Ruth had was a block of semisweet chocolate. She chopped it up and stirred it into the dough.

Ruth thought the chocolate would melt and blend as the dough baked. Instead of melting, the chocolate pieces held their shape and the cookies came out golden. Curious how the chocolate-speckled cookies tasted, Ruth ate one. They were delicious!
