In the Middle of Things

by Jesse Florea

As a middle blocker for the U.S. Women’s Volleyball team, Val Sterk has to be fast on her feet. She must be in position to block the opposing team’s hits and be able to score points on her own. And this 6-foot-2-inch athlete is up to the challenge.

"My strongest point is my quickness," Val says. "I’m a quick attacker and can beat the defense a lot of times."

While her feet may be quick, Val also knows where to plant them—on the Word of God. She grew up in a Christian home and attended a Christian school for 12 years.

"At a young age, I started to understand God’s love for me," Val explains. "There are a lot of other things in life, such as sports, but when it comes down to it Christ is No. 1."

Val has started a Bible study, which is attended at times by almost half her team. And good Christian friends—such as Mickisha Hurley and Demetria Stance—encourage each other to play their best for God and country.
