Last November I was in Christian Youth Theater’s
(CYT) production of “Narnia.” Based on The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, the musical
features four children who are transported from their
guardian’s house to the land of Narnia. The White
Witch, who represents Satan, battles the lion Aslan,
who represents Jesus, for control of Narnia.
I played a bear. All the animals in Narnia talked and
had human characteristics. It was difficult to develop my
character, because it had to be bothhuman and animal-
like. To play the bear, I spoke with a deep, scratchy
voice, like a growl. I also hunched over and added a
wobble to my walk.
My favorite scenes were the sword fights. I never
thought I could pick up a sword and know how to use it,
but there were a lot of cool battle scenes.
In one song called “Deep Magic,” the witch and her evil
forces battle Aslan and his followers. When I was on
stage during that scene, I knew it was close to what it
would feel like to battle the Devil. In the end, Aslan
gives his life for the boy Edmond, which represents
Jesus dying on the Cross for our sins. After Aslan is
killed on the stone table, he comes back to life!
People from a homeless shelter came to one of our
performances. It felt good that they could see the show,
because it tells the story of Jesus.
I have been involved with CYT since I was 8. The best
thing about being in CYT is making new friends. It’s just
like a big family. Before each performance we pray and
sing “I Love You, Lord.” Listening to that is just like
hearing angels sing; it’s really powerful.
