My mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (M.S.) in 1982. Multiple sclerosis affects the central nervous system. This means any part of your body that has a nerve in it can be affected. For example, you could have blurred vision, problems walking, shaky hands or difficulty speaking.
When I was born in 1988, my mom’s M.S. was in remission. I think that was a blessing. Because of my mom’s age and her disease, I could have needed special attention. But I turned out to be the exact opposite. I’ve been a healthy, straight-A student all my life.
My family is so thankful. My mom has trouble walking, but otherwise she is doing fine. She quit working in June 1999, so she can stay home and relax. She gives herself shots every week to help ease the pain and goes to M.S. meetings once a month to keep up with new information. We are happy God has given her the strength to get through each day.
