As missionaries, we are always praying for protection. And after being close to death, I’m glad for those prayers. Last year our mission went to the beach to talk about the past year and prepare for the upcoming one. On the final day, we walked to some tide pools. Five of us were on a cliff where water splashes up through cracks in the rock. My friend Elizabeth saw a ledge that the waves didn’t touch. We all went out on the ledge. But we weren’t there for more than five minutes when a huge wave crashed down right on top of us, smashing us onto the rough ground.
I slid and cut my chest and knee. I also lost a few layers of skin on my finger. Elizabeth’s back, arm and ankle were badly hurt. Bill’s knees and feet were cut up. Eric got his shoulder, knee and both thumbs badly scraped. Michael had it the worst; he needed 15 stitches in his knee. Right away we realized God had spared us because we could’ve been swept over the edge of the cliff to the jagged rocks below.
When we got back to the camp, we found out one of the missionaries had been praying all the time we were out. My brother had even prayed for our protection the night before. We’re all fine now, and I still thank God we’re alive.
